Enoch Tsang is a Canadian composer and clarinetist who writes for a wide variety of instruments and ensembles. Nicholas Busch has had the honor of premiering several of his solo piano works since meeting him in 2015.
April Showers is a piece that lends itself well to the piano, both because of the timbres intended and the truly idiomatic writing. The constant modal modulations and textural changes mimic the unpredictability of a rain storm, which is at some times thundering and at others barely audible. The entire range of the instrument is used to produce this effect, which combined with the constantly tumbling ostinato and memorable melodies tie the entire piece into a cohesive unit.
